-An American bomb was fired out of range and kills nine Frenchmen at Fort National, Saint-Malo (where Etienne is)

-Marie continues to hide. She sleeps and wakes up wondering if the German is gone yet. She hears her father's voice again and this time it tells her to not make any noise and to think about something else other than her hunger and thirst.

-She hears the German (von Rump)'s voice and hears him limping downstairs. Her father's voice promises her that she will survive because of the diamond in her pocket. She opens one of the cans and eats the beans that inside. She listens to the rain and then slips down to her room to drink from the can that collects water from a leak in the roof.

-She sees one of her books (Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea) was thrown across her bedroom floor by the German and she picks it up. She then goes to the radio in the attic and pulls out the microphone and starts reading the book. She hopes that somewhere Etienne is listening.

-Werner and Volkheimer are still trapped under the Hotel of Bees. It's been four days. Werner tries to find a signal and then realizes that he probably didn't fully fix the radio.

-Werner asks Volkheimer to use the grenade to which Volkheimer refuses because they would both die if he did.

-They start talking about their childhoods and how their lives used to be before they joined Nazi school.

-Volkheimer admits to wanting to leave his home so badly to join the Nazi regime when he was younger. Werner admits to the same feeling. They both wonder why they wanted to do it so badly.

-Werner hears Marie's voice come through the radio. He listens to her read Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea until she suddenly stops and hisses that "he" (the German aka von Rump) is right below her.

-Werner freaks and wonders what they can do but Volkheimer tells him that there is nothing they can do to help her.

-Von Rump wakes up and examines the model of Saint-Malo and realizes that there is one piece missing. Etienne's house. He believes that since the house is the only one left standing in the area, the "Sea of Flames" is hidden within the house somewhere.

-He decides to search the house one more time. This time, more carefully. :o
