Ten - 12 August 1944

-Werner continues to listen to Marie reading on the radio (awww!!!) He then lets Volkheimer listen to it and admits that he began listening to her weeks ago.

-Now they are listening to Marie asking for help and saying that there is someone there who wants to kill her. How ironic is it that Werner saved Marie's life only to have her get killed by someone else?

-When Marie finishes the story, Werner sees a phantom version of Marie float down from the ceiling. She sits on the rubble and recites the crimes of her existence.

-Volkheimer starts to give up on life but the Clare de Lune starts playing. He gets a feeling of hope. :) He decides that he needs to risk it and use the grenade to blow their way out of the Hotel of Bees. It works and both him and Werner are free.

-Werner runs immediately to number 4 rue Vauborel (Etienne's house) and he finally feels a sense of purpose in his life.

-Etienne is at Fort National (von Rump probably turned him in) and begs to be let go saying that his niece is alone and blind but the jailers ignore him.

-Marie continues to read coming to the conclusion that she will decide what to do with the Sea of Flames when she is done reading. She wonders if her story is bringing comfort to her uncle and if anyone else is listening.

-After days in the attic, Marie finally summons courage to attack the German. She starts a record and turns up the volume. She swings her legs with a knife in her hand. The stone is safe in the model of Etienne's house in her pocket.

-Von Rump is ready to give up. He wonders if the Sea of Flames ever left Paris and starts doubting its existence. He hears a Corporal clearing houses and finds out that they (the Germans) are giving up Saint-Malo (yasss!!)

-He thinks about his daughters as he makes his way out of the house. He hears Marie's voice but before he can see where she is he hears the door open below him. It's Werner.

-Von Rump is pale when he sees Werner and smiles at him. Wernes assumes that they are comrades and that they are both seeking the same thing. Von Rump thinks so too but tells Werner that only one of them can have it. See Von Rump thinks that Werner is talking about the stone when he's just talking about the girl. Von Rump points his weapon at Werner and then gets distracted. He gets distracted long enough for Werner to lunge at him.

-Marie can tell that the person coming is not Von Rump. The sun is starting to rise when Werner approaches Marie (I'm legitimately crying right now). Werner calls out "Are you there?" in French and tries to talk to her in the limited amount of French he knows. He finds out that the person whose voice he's heard on the radio when he was a kid is Marie's great-uncle Etienne.

-Marie opens the second can of food together and the air is filled with the smell of peaches. (ahhh!!!)

-They sit together and continue talking and wait for the cease fire. Werner tries to make the most out of the time they have together and tries to remember everything about Marie. He wishees they could hide out in the house for the rest of their lives.

-When they hear the cease fire, neither of them wants to leave the other. Marie goes one last time to the grotto/secret place that is covered by the tide and brings Werner with her. She places the model of Etienne's house with the stone inside into the water.

-Before Werner and Marie leave each other, she hands him the key to the grotto.

-Marie stays with Madame Ruelle until Etienne and the other men are released from Fort National. Etienne and Marie leaves for Paris.

-Werner is captured by the Americans after leaving Saint-Malo. He asks about Marie but can't find anyone who can tell her if she made it out. </3

-He gets fed but he can't take in the food. He soon gets really sick and gets sent to a sick tent. He lays near the dead and the dying. He touches the key and reminisces about Marie, Jutta, Volkheimer, Frederick, and his childhood.

-An American soldier watches as Werner walks out the sick tent and head towards the trees. The soldier calls out to him telling him to stop because there's a landmine. Werner is crazy from the fever and does not listen to the soldier. Werner disappears. </3
