Twelve - 2014

-Flash forward to 2014.

-Volkheimer is now fifty one years old and lives in Pforzheim, Germany. He repairs and installs TV antennas for a living. He receives a package from Berlin that includes pictures of things that need to be identified. He doesn't recognize the bag or the model house but he knows the notebook belongs to Werner. Werner's bag was collected by the US Army.

-Jutta is now an algebra teacher. She is married to Albert Wette and they have a six-year-old son named Max. Volkheimer visits her to deliver Werner's belongings. He tells her of the times he had shared with her brother. He tells her that the last time he saw Werner was in Saint-Malo and believed Werner fell in love when they were there. :)

-Jutta finds the small model house in Werner's backpack and sifts through the letters she sent Werner. After Max is done with school, Jutta takes him to Saint-Malo. She sees the ocean and admires the way Werner described it in his letters to her.

-She visits a museum and asks if they know anything about the model house. They give her the address of the person who used to live there (Marie).

-Marie has earned her docorate and manages the Museum of Natural History and studies mollusks and sea creatures in her free time. She and Etienne found out that her father died of influenza in 1943. She has a daughter named Helene. When Jutta and Max visits Marie, they give her back the model house. After they leave, Marie opens the house and sees the old iron key.

-The "Sea of Flames" is two hundred miles deep within the ocean. It is covered in barnicles and cloaked in algae.

-Frederick lives outside West Berlin and is taken care of by his mother. He is oblivious to everything around him but his mother never loses hope. :)

-So you know how Frederick used to be obsessed with birds? So one day while Frederick was looking out the window an owl perches on the sill and stays there for a while. Did Frederick see it?

-Marie lives long enough to see her grandson Michel turn twelve. He plays a video game next to her and she wonders about the electromagnetic waves that travel in and out of his video game and how many there are between text conversations, phone calls, and television shows.

-She wonders if souls travel these electromagnetic waves. She starts to think of Etienne, Madame Manec, her father, and Werner and believes that they are part of the sky now.
