Five - January 1941
-During January recess, Frederick takes Werner to his family's townhouse in Berlin. Werner is shocked by how rich Frederick's life is and how he has an elevator that takes them upstairs. He shows Werner his prized possession which are two Audubon book volumes with gold like slipcovers.
-In February, Volkheimer drags a prisoner through the snow to a stake outside and ties him there. The prisoner was to be punished for trying to escape a work camp. Everyone is expected to each pour a bucket on the prisoner until he freezes to death.
-Frederick refuses and pours three pails of water onto the ground and tells Bastian (the overseer) that he is finished. -Frederick continues to be chosen as the weakest boy of the group and each time he gets chosen he gets caught and beaten. Werner suggests Frederick leave the school. Frederick pretty much tells Werner that he should mind his own damn business and if he doesn't want to be seen with him Werner should drop him.
-One day Werner wakes up and finds out that Frederick is not in his bunk. He doesn't see him for the rest of the morning so he pays a visit to the infirmary during lunch.
-When he walks in he immediately sees a single bed with blood in it. There is blood on the pillow, sheets, and bed frame. Werner asks the nurse about the blood. The nurse answers that Frederick is being sent for surgery. He asks her when Frederick will come back and the nurse shakes her head. We can assume that Frederick will not make it.
-Werner starts thinking about Jutta and wondering how she is. He knows he will never be able to confess to her what happened to Frederick.
-Marie's father has been gone for twenty days now and Marie is now giving up hope that he'll be coming home. Marie and her family don't know anything about her father's arrest. They just know that he didn't make it to the museum in Paris. Marie soon receives a letter from her father saying that he is in good hands and is safe.
-Von Rump finally realizes that the stone he has is a fake and locates the man who made it (Dupont). Von Rump finds out that there are two other fakes. He frames Dupont for having fake food rations and gets him arrested.
-Von Rump goes to the doctor who tells him he needs a biopsy.
-Marie meets Harold Bazin ("Crazy Harold Bazin") who leads her and Madame Manec through a bunch of pretty sketchy alleyways to a special hiding place where the city used to kennel mastiffs. It is now submerged by the tides.
-As they head back home, Harold secretly gives Marie the key to the iron door.
-Madame Manec continues to try to disrupt the occupying forces (yes girl power!) and sometimes brings Marie along with her. They create code names for each other (The Whelk and The Blade).
-Madame Manec asks Etienne to join her efforts in undermining the German but he is scared. He is especially scared of Claude the perfumer aka the dickhead who we know betrayed Marie's father. We see that Claude gets more food rations that everyone else and can assume that it's cause he's a real kissup to the Germans.
-Harold mysteriously disappears and the women who support Madame Manec's resistance get nervous and want to stop their efforts for a while but Madame Manec wants them to suck it up.
-Marie and Etienne finally find out through two French policemen that Marie's father was arrested for conspiracy (looking suspicious). They search Etienne's house and tells Etienne that he should burn the three French flags that he has before the Germans find them.
-Etienne burns all of the flags in the fireplace and forbids Madame Manec from involving any of them in her resistance movement.
-So now there's tension between Madame Manec and Etienne. They act like they don't know each other and Madame Manec reminds him that doing nothing will make things worse.
-Madame Manec soon gets sick with pneumonia and Etienne takes care of her in a motherly way.
-Marie's father writes back that he has received the stuff Marie sent him but that he was not allowed to keep the soap or the paper that the soap, toothbrush and comb were wrapped in. He tells her that he spends his days making cardboard and dreaming of the museum. He also tells her to look inside the carving of Etienne's house (where the "Sea of Flames" is stored) and believes she will do the right thing (whatever that may be).
-Madame Manec dies in June and Etienne calls the doctor but the doctor did not make it in time.
-Werner's sister sends him his childhood notebook containing his drawings and inventions. Werner gets extremely homesick and misses Jutta even more. He admires her stubbornness and the fact that she still loves him even after he made the decision to go to Nazi school.
-Werner asks Dr. Hauptmann to send him home. Hauptmann tells him that his life is no longer his own and that he is only allowed to go home when he is ordered to.
-Werner gets told that his age was incorrectly recorded as eighteen and not sixteen and will get transfered to another tech division.
-Werner goes to Berner to see Frederick. Frederick's brain no longer functions and he is unable to feed himself or enjoy birds as he used to.
-Von Rump gets treated for lymphoma and his conditions leave him unable to concentrate. His mind goes directly to Sea of Flames and thinks about how the keeper of the stone can live forever.
