Marie-Laure LeBlanc

Marie is a sixteen year old French girl with freckles and has been blind ever since she was six. Her father Daniel LeBlanc gave her two wooden models of Paris and Saint-Malo to help her navigate the city on her own. Because of Daniel's love and patience, Marie grows up not allowing her blindness doesn't destroy her life. When her father gets sent to a German prison camp, Marie gets depressed. When Madame Manec takes Marie to the beach, she is immediately comforted by the beauty of the sea. She gets overwhelmed by the sounds and smells that the sea makes and develops a liking for sea creatures. She and Madame Manec help give out food and supplies to the needy while France was being occupied. One of the people she helps is Harold Bazin who gives her a key to this grotto. She visits the grotto frequently and it becomes her safe haven. After Madame Manec dies, Marie continues Madame Manec's risky business of resisting the Germans. Marie is a bright girl and is an avid reader and enjoys listening to her great-uncle Etienne read. For the most part she is quiet and reserved but that doesn't mean she can't kick ass. She pretty much tells the German commander von Rumpel to f*** off when he interrogates her with questions about her father. She also had the courage to broadcast Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea while von Rumpel was on the floor beneath her. Keep in mind this girl is blind but still survived two encounters with a German. She's pretty badass if you ask me. She falls in love with Werner and is the first person to ever return the stone to the sea. When Marie grows up, she chases her dreams of studying marine life and manages the same museum her father worked in.
