Sorry to disappoint all the diehard Nicholas Sparks fans out there who thought Werner and Marie were going to reunite and ride out into the sunset together after World War II was over. But for what it's worth, what Werner and Marie had was pretty cute considering the world around them was being torn apart. I mean there were the concepts of forbidden love (like hey it's not everyday you see a Nazi falling in love with someone he's supposed to kill) and damsel in distress (when Werner puts his life on the line to save Marie twice (TWICE!!)). And can we all admit how Marie being blind hits all the feels because she didn't fall for Werner physically? She fell for his intellect and compassion like aww. Technology wasn't great back then so they didn't have any late night phone calls/texts, but they did connect through story-telling, the sea, and the radio. And yeah there wasn't much action but there was enough to make your heart make when they parted ways. Yeah, Anthony Doerr pulled out a complete crappy Nicholas Sparks-move when he decided to blow Werner up in a landmine towards the end of the book, but it goes to show that not everyone gets a happy ending during the Holocaust.
