Eleven - 1945
-We learn that Jutta lives in an abandoned printing press in Berlin with Frau Elena (remember she's the woman who raised Jutta and Werner at Children's House) and three other girls. They work in a factory that makes machine parts.
-The girls work long hours and six days a week. There is barely enough food for everyone and death is everywhere.
-Jutta receives letters about Werner's death and she dreams about him for a few weeks.
-Russian officers find the girls in the factory and Frau Elena tries to calm them and sacrifices herself to go first so the officers will be gentler with them. The officers proceed to rape them.
-Etienne and Marie return to Paris and rent the same flat that Marie and her father used to live in. They try to look for her father and look for him as trains come in but he does not return. The museum lets her know that they are doing everything they can but no one asks about the Sea of Flames.
-Berlin finally surrenders and everyone who returns are malnourished.
-Etienne tries to prepare Marie for the worst-that her father might never come back.
-Summer 1945 passes and Marie announces that she'd like to go to school :)
